When someone looses the ability to change their opinions, point of view, knowledge system etc are they effectively mentally dead. When you lose the ability to step from your mind set, and fully settle into your comfortable ideas are you anything abstract from an animal?

Yes, your nature as a human being denotes enough potential for change and intellectual growth a human by their very existence as a human is superior to an animal.
